OnLogic builds rugged industrial PCs for the IoT edge — configurable to spec, built to order, and shipped in days. As their global customer base grew, the legacy commerce platform couldn't keep up. Orium led the replatform onto a composable architecture; I led the delivery.

The Challenge

A complex catalog, a global audience, a roadmap held hostage.

The legacy monolith was a constant friction point. Every business change required a workaround. Three problems compounded the issue.

First, a complex catalog. OnLogic's products are configurable to thousands of variants — different chassis, processors, memory, I/O combinations. The legacy system flattened this, forcing customers through a buying experience that felt more like a database query than a configurator.

Second, a global audience. Multiple languages, currencies, tax regimes, and localized content — none of which the existing platform handled gracefully.

Third, a roadmap held hostage. Strategic projects kept ending in "we can't do that with our current stack." Innovation cycles stretched out.

The Approach

Rebuild around composable, headless, swappable.

We rebuilt the commerce stack around three principles: composable, headless, swappable.

commercetools became the headless core, handling cart, checkout, and order orchestration. Contentful took on content. Algolia owned product discovery and search. Each piece selected for what it does best — each piece replaceable when something better comes along.

I ran a co-delivery model across both teams: Orium engineers and OnLogic engineers, spanning North and South American time zones, working as one squad. We started with a proof-of-concept to validate the architecture against OnLogic's most demanding flows before scaling commitment.

The Outcome

A platform engineered for the business, not the other way around.

OnLogic now operates on a platform built for their business. The custom price engine handles configurable products without manual reconciliation. The checkout supports every payment method and tax rule across their international markets — credit cards, bank transfers, Bancontact, SOFORT, giropay, PayPal, and OnLogic's own financing — each with the state management to keep the buying flow coherent.

Just as importantly, the team came out of the project with a platform their roadmap can actually build on. "We can't do that" is no longer the default answer.
